DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) is a student organization that prepares emerging leaders in the areas of Marketing, Hospitality, Management and Entrepreneurship. The DECA state competition was held in Charleston, SC March 3-5, 2017. State competition consists of two parts: a 100 question multiple choice exam and a management role play scenario. Following the exam, students are given 10 minutes to prepare for their role play before performing in front of a judge.
Pickens County CTC DECA chapter won the following awards at state competition: Dylan Hall, DHS - 3rd place winner in Hotel & Lodging Management, Kristina Moore, PHS - 4th place winner in Principles of Hospitality & Tourism, and Patricia Lollis, EHS, 7th place in Principles of Hospitality. There were approximately 1400 DECA members from across the state competing in 47 different events.
Pickens County CTC DECA also won the DECA, Inc. National Thrive award for a chapter campaign that was submitted in December. National DECA gave three Thrive Awards in the state of South Carolina. Pickens County CTC was chosen to represent the state of South Carolina at the Thrive Academy at Nationals for recognition of this campaign. Justice Dorton (PHS), Hannah Miller (DHS) and Patricia Lollils (EHS) were awarded these positions.
