STEEP Sweetheart Dance

On February 27, 2018, Pickens County Career & Technology Center, hosted our very first STEEP semi-formal sweetheart dance. The dance was held from 12:00-2:00pm at the Pickens County Career & Technology Center.  The intent of the STEEP Sweetheart Dance was to help students with special needs be less anxious and be prepared for their home school military balls and prom. Before the dance the students practiced event planning, catering, decorating, created a playlist of music and a selfie booth to capture the fun.

The STEEP program is a four-year transition education and employability program that prepares our students with special needs for life and entry level employment in our community. Students will each receive a certificate upon completion of the program and then enter the workforce.

The director of the STEEP program for Pickens County School District is Ms. Stephanie Brewer. Described by one of her students, Alex Mays, as a “loving, caring and outgoing woman, who will never give up on you no matter what and she treats us like family like were her own”.  Prior to her director position, Ms. Brewer was a special education teacher for twelve years.

Another STEEP instructor is Ms. Lauren Conn. Ms. Conn has been a STEEP teacher for 5 years and teaches employment skills and independent living. Her biggest motivator is seeing her students excel in life. Before she became a STEEP teacher, she worked for the Clemson life program.

There were approximately 60 students, including the teachers from Pickens County schools that attended the dance. It was a great success! STEEP DanceSTEEP Dance
